Preventing Fresh Water Shortages With Vertical Farming

In recent times, we’ve seen an unprecedented shortage in fresh water. In July 2021, CNN posted this headline: “Lake Powell hits lowest level on record in climate change-fueled water crisis”.* This fresh water source, which ultimately provides fresh water to 40 million people living across seven Western United States and Mexico, had fallen to roughly 3,554 feet in elevation — just 33% of capacity — according to the US Bureau of Reclamation. Now more than ever before must we look to conserve our fresh water usage.

At the Kauri Foundation, we look to Vertical Farming as one possible solution to conserving fresh water. According to Planet Renewed, 80% of fresh water consumption in the United States alone went towards agriculture.* Vertical farming uses 80%-99% LESS water than conventional farming methods. We can help prevent world-wide disasters such as fresh water shortage by including vertical farms with our housing systems, thereby giving families and communities the ability to grow and harvest their own food. This method is good for the environment, as well as good for people’s mental health! Join us in preventing certain disasters by incorporating this green-living housing model in post-disaster locations around the world!
