Avoiding A Food Shortage Disaster

By the year 2050, the expected world population will be 9.7 Billion.* This means that in order to feed the world’s population, we will need to see a 69% increase in available food calories. Currently, the traditional farming model does not seem to have the ability to scale to this level of food production in under 30 years. Since the Kauri Foundation is deeply involved with sustainable post-disaster housing, we seek to incorporate vertical farms into our housing designs. If we can help prevent food shortages around the world, then we can prevent this disaster from happening as the world population increases. According to the World Economic Forum, Vertical Farms tend to produce more food than conventional farms. Nordic Harvest says vertically grown plants can be harvested 15 times a year. In a conventional field, harvesting happens twice a year.*

Vertical Farms harvest 95% (or more!) of their crop - contrasting traditional farms which sometimes don’t harvest even 50% of their crop. In fact, 20-40% of outdoor crops are lost to diseases, pests and weeds every year, and even more are lost to climate crises.* We are passionate about giving families and communities the resources they need to be self-sufficient, even in a world where natural disasters and food shortages can happen at any minute. We provide safe, secure, and dignified homes to these post-disaster communities, and set them up for long-term success!
