Behind the Name

Our mission is Bringing Land to Life. It should be no surprise that the meaning behind our name, “Kauri Foundation” ties in with our ultimate mission.

Tucked inside the indigenous forests of upper North Island, New Zealand, presides a unique tree in which the Kauri Foundation finds the basis of its name. It’s one of the largest, longest living tree species in the world, with mature trees having an average diameter of two metres! The Kauri Tree is a cornerstone in New Zealand’s forest habitats, as they provide shelter and stability to the multitudes of native flora and fauna in their forest habitat.

The Kauri Foundation mirrors the Kauri tree in many ways. When disaster strikes a community, we seek to establish roots within the community, to provide homes for families to feel safe and secure. We seek to encourage life; not just survival, but sustainable longevity and quality of life. We’re here to sink roots into a community, and provide them with long-term resources to thrive in the wake of horrible disasters.

Just as the native birds find shelter and security in the branches of the Kauri tree during a storm, we at the Kauri Foundation offer strong and stable security in post-disaster communities in the form of comfortable, dignified housing. We’re not offering a temporary band-aid, but a long-term, viable solution to help people get back on their feet.

The Kauri Foundation seeks to establish strong, personal connections and foundations within a rebuilding community, to create a lasting impact by providing a living environment. Our mission is bringing land to life, to give communities in a post-disaster situation the ability to dream again from a safe, secure, dignified home.
