Union Rescue Mission - Part 2

Union Rescue Mission has several satellite programs they see as "the way of our future" (Rev. Bales). One of these programs is called Hope Gardens. Hope Gardens is a transitional home for single moms, children, and senior women. The only requirement for individuals or families to be accepted into Hope Gardens is "that they want to change their lives" (Rev. Bales). When speaking to Rev. Bales about Union Rescue Mission's work, it is impossible not to be in awe. Having just celebrated their 15th year of Hope Gardens, Rev. Bales was excited to share about the "77 acres of beautiful mountain setting, grassy area, hiking path, and even a koi pond." He went on to say, "It lives up to its name of being Hope Gardens. It is supportive transitional housing where kids can blossom, moms can take their time and save money while getting job training and a job, and move out into permanent housing, never to experience homelessness as a family again." After making a 2-3 year commitment, families and single women can finally breathe, knowing that they will be receiving the love and care they need and can then pass on to their children.

As a sign of URM's commitment to the families of LA county, Hope Gardens has about an 80% success rate. Rev. Bales credits this high number to the "mom's commitment to be there for their kids and because of the environment." He describes it as "a great place for reunification for moms with their kids and kids with their moms." Rev. Bales says, "I don't think there is anything much better than that." Kauri Foundation is in awe of the amazing things that Reverend Bales and Union Rescue Mission are doing and looks forward to bearing witness to thousands more lives being changed.
